Province releases brook trout to help recreational fishing, spawning
The P.E.I. government has released 1,000 brook trout this week into Barlow's Pond near Wellington, P.E.I., meaning more than 45,000 fish have been added to the province's ponds and rivers this year.
The released fish contribute to the province's efforts to help recreational fishing and promote spawning for the future, according to a news release.
Fish raised at Scotchfort hatchery
The fish are raised at the Abegweit Biodiversity Enhancement Hatchery in Scotchfort, P.E.I., prior to being released. The P.E.I. Department of Communities, Land and Environment works with the hatchery and local watershed groups to raise and release fish.
Also this year, 40,000 small trout were released in places such as Trout River, Mill River, Wilmot River, North River, Clyde River, Montague River, Valleyfield River, Brudenell River and Little Miminegash River.
The province says 4,000 larger brook trout were released into ponds in Borden, Alberton, Kensington and West Point.
