Publix is adding burrito bowl bars to new stores. Will Lexington locations get it?

Some Lexington grocery stores might want to think about upping their grab-and-go game, because Publix is coming into the Kentucky market hot ... and spicy.

The Florida-based supermarket opened its first Kentucky location in Louisville in January and is bringing several to the Lexington area.

The Louisville store was one of the first to offer an expanded prepared foods section, almost like a food court, with made-to-order burritos and bowls, as well as a hot bar, a salad bar and a soup bar, not to mention the famous Pub Subs, hand-made sandwiches.

A few newly opened stores in Florida also have the burrito bar and a Pours outlet that serves drinks and smoothies too.

“These stores may also have pizza, kettle popcorn, Pours, and the burrito area is part of the venue,” said Publix spokeswoman Lindsey Willis.

Will Lexington Publix stores have nacho, burrito and bowl bars?

Will the Publix stores coming to Lexington have these amenities? Stay tuned, but the fact that the Louisville store has the amenities is a good sign.

The first Lexington Publix location is expected to open at the Fountains of Palomar late this year, so mark your calendars. There’s also a second location planned for Citation Point, and a rumored one expected to be announced for the Nicholasville/Brannon Crossing area.

Another Publix was announced in December for Romany Road in the Chevy Chase area, but no timeline has been set for that store.

Kroger, which is building a new store in Lexington on Newtown Pike, also offers pizza, fried chicken fresh deli sandwiches made to order, sushi and more in many of its stores.

Salad bars, which used to be a lunchtime staple for many, have been gone from many stores since the COVID pandemic began.
