Quantum Leap Boss Explains Why Janis Won’t Join the Team in Season 2

Janis Calavicci may have helped the Quantum Leap team stop Martinez in Season 1, but that doesn’t mean she will be a permanent fixture at headquarters.

Last season, we learned that Janis — who also happens to be Al Calavicci’s daughter — helped Ben make his unauthorized leap, aiding our hero in his efforts to prevent his fiancé from being murdered. When Ben lost his memories after the jump, she continued to work on their secret mission while hiding out from the rest of the Quantum Leap team. She was eventually captured and proved to be a valuable resource, even pointing out that Ziggy was the “mole” they were after.

Martin Gero, who serves as executive producer and co-showrunner (alongside Dean Georgaris), tells TVLine that while portrayer Georgina Reilly was “phenomenal” during the NBC drama’s freshman run, Janis will not join the crew full-time in Season 2, which airs a new episode this Wednesday.

“We love the actress, Georgina Reilly. She was an amazing addition to the first season,” Gero shares. “The reality is, we have so many characters to service already in those present-day stories and barely enough time. As much as we love her, the idea of adding her into the fold would just start to eat away screentime from our other great established cast.”

The EP noted that one of their goals this year was to “give more space for that cast that we love. To not just be exposition machines, but to have their own story and to get to know them better.” Incorporating Janis would have “taken oxygen away from those stories.”

Still, Janis exists in this world, which leaves the door wide open for her potential return. “She’s deeply entrenched into the Quantum Leap pathology, being a Calavicci,” Gero adds, “and it would be great to see her again.”
