'Can we focus on commemorating prominent Canadians?': Queen Elizabeth II's memorial $2 coin draws divided reaction

The new $2 coin released by the Royal Canadian Mint to mark the passing of Queen Elizabeth II received mix reactions from the public.

While many love it, others came out online and pointed out the waste of tax dollars in such a time of economic downturn.

The coin, unveiled on Wednesday, is similar to thee existing coins, except it features an image of the Queen on one side with a black nickel exterior.

"Like a mourning band, the black outer ring surrounds the polar bear design at the centre of the coin's reverse," the Mint said.

"Queen Elizabeth II served as Canada's head of state for seven decades and for millions of Canadians, she was the only monarch they had ever known," said Marie Lemay, president and CEO of the Royal Canadian Mint. "Our special $2 circulation coin offers Canadians a way to remember her."

Today marks the three-month anniversary of the Queen's death.
