Race on to Save Entangled Whale Spotted Off California Coast

A gray whale tangled in netting connected to two buoys would “likely die,” according to the NOAA, unless crews were able to free it.

Drone footage captured by Tony Corso shows the stricken whale on April 9, pulling the floats along behind it, with the netting wrapped around its tail area. Corso said that he learned of the whale’s plight from a Facebook post and went down to the beach to see if he could film it by drone.

According to local news reports, the whale was first spotted with fishing gear trapped on its tail on March 22 in southern California.

The NOAA told KRON4 it was working to free the whale. "If the whale does not get untangled, it will likely die, they said. Credit: Tony Corso via Storyful
