Ratings: Prime Video’s Thursday Night Football Hits Highs With Season Opener

Thursday Night Football on Prime Video got off to a great start this year, hitting new ratings highs for the Amazon streamer’s NFL coverage.

Thursday’s season opener, a Week 2 matchup between the Minnesota Vikings and the Philadelphia Eagles, averaged 16.6 million viewers across all media platforms, Amazon says, making it the most-watched Thursday Night Football game ever on the streaming service. (Amazon took over the exclusive broadcast rights to Thursday Night Football last season.) Total viewership was up 16% over last year’s opener, and the game also drew more viewers last night than anything on broadcast or cable, even ranking as the week’s highest-rated program among viewers 18-34 across all of broadcast and cable.

“We’re so excited to have kicked off our second season of exclusive TNF coverage by setting new all-time audience records,” Amazon’s VP, Global Head of Sports Jay Marine said in a statement. “Building on last year’s success, our team worked tirelessly this offseason to raise the bar and enhance the viewing experience even further, so to see this kind of response and turnout from fans is very gratifying. We are thrilled with the continued growth and performance of TNF, the ways in which we are innovating in the space, and the value our sports portfolio provides to Prime members.”

Amazon’s Prime Video service is the exclusive home for Thursday Night Football all season long, with next week’s matchup featuring the New York Giants and the San Francisco 49ers. Veteran sportscaster Al Michaels does play-by-play for TNF, with Kirk Herbstreit offering color commentary alongside him in the booth.
