RCMP Report – M.D. of Taber Council

During the most recent M.D. of Taber council meeting, Sgt. Stewart Gemmill from the Taber/ Vauxhall RCMP detachment presented Council with the May 2024 statistics from the Taber/ Vauxhall detachment.

To begin his report, Sgt. Gemmill stated that the detachment responded to 126 calls for service with 106 of them being within the M.D. of Taber. Sgt. Gemmill also reported 0 impaired drivers, 3 criminal code violations, 28 9-1-1 hang-ups with 23 of those being within the M.D. The detachment, Sgt. Gemmill said, also performed 32 criminal record checks and four fingerprint checks.

In terms of patrols, Sgt. Gemmill said, the detachment did 11 patrols of Enchant, 21 patrols of Grassy Lake, and 13 patrols of Hays for 45 hamlet patrols. The detachment, Sgt. Gemmill said, also did 4 patrols of the M.D. Park, 1 patrol of the Forks, 8 patrols of Enchant, 2 patrols of Chin, and 1 patrol of Grassy Lake for 16 campground patrols and the detachment also did 123 patrols within the M.D. of Taber.

As far as tickets are concerned, Sgt. Gemmill said, the detachment wrote 14 tickets and 11 were written within the M.D. of Taber and Brooks, Redcliff, or Lethbridge Traffic Services wrote 4 for 18 violation tickets last month.

Person’s crimes, Sgt. Gemmill said, are down by 6 instances, property crime is up by 68%, break and entering has seen no change, theft of motor vehicles is up by 5 instances, and theft under $5,000 is up by 1 instance.

The detachment, Sgt. Gemmill stated, laid charges in one criminal investigation, but there were no complaints of domestic violence in the month of May. Staff numbers, Sgt. Gemmill explained, are currently low, but a new member is coming to the detachment at the end of July.

Sgt. Gemmill stated he also hosted a detachment tour for 15 kindergarten children from Vauxhall on May 8, 2024, and he also worked a 3-hour shift at McDonalds’s to support McHappy Day, which raised funds for the local hospital. On May 11, 2024, Sgt. Gemmill said, two RCMP. members also participated in the Grand Entry for Taber’s Pow Wow. Finally, Sgt. Gemmill said, on May 31, he conducted a tour of the detachment for 43 kindergarten children from Grassy Lake.

"That’s what’s going on at my detachment,” said Sgt. Gemmill.

A motion was made to receive the RCMP report as presented, and the motion was carried.
