Rdio launches free trial in Canada to entice subscribers

Internet music streaming site Rdio is offering Canadians up to six months of free access to its site in order to bring in new customers for its subscription service.

Rdio has a library of 18 million songs, and is available on most smartphones, tablets and on desktops. The trial will allow users a limited number of free songs per month, with the ability to subscribe once that runs out.

Legal music streaming in Canada is a largely untapped market. Pandora and Spotify, which are popular in the U.S. and in Europe have yet to launch in Canada due to rights issues.

Rdio was launched in the U.S. in August 2010 by Skype co-founder Janus Friis, and is currently available in 17 countries worldwide.
