Rebecca Makkai, C Pam Zhang Among 2024 Carol Shields Prize for Fiction Nominees — See the Longlist! (Exclusive)
The prestigious prize honors English-language fiction books by female and non-binary authors
The Carol Shields Prize for Fiction has announced its 2024 longlist.
Authors like Rebecca Makkai and C Pam Zhang are among the nominees for the prestigious award, which is the largest English-language literary prize for non-binary and women authors of novels, short story collections and graphic novels, per a statement shared with PEOPLE. This year’s nominees were chosen by jury chair Jen Sookfong Lee, Laila Lalami, Claire Messud, Dolen Perkins-Valdez and Eden Robinson.
“The jury for this year's Carol Shields Prize is so very pleased to share this exceptional and diverse longlist,” says Lee in a statement shared with PEOPLE. “All the authors have written remarkable works of fiction that illuminate who we are—our histories, flaws, ambitions and loves—and who we could be. Congratulations to all the longlisted writers and their publishers.”

Created in 2020, the prize is named for Carol Shields, the author of over 20 books, including 1993's The Stone Diaries, which won the 1995 Pulitzer Prize, the 1993 Governor General’s Award and was shortlisted for the Booker Prize. Winners of the award will receive $150,000 and a residency at the Fogo Island Inn. Four finalists will receive $12,500 each. In the case of a translated work winning the prize, $100,000 will be given to the author and $50,000 to the translator.
When We Were Sisters by Fatimah Asghar won the 2023 prize, and the finalists included Brown Girls by Daphne Palasi Andreades, What We Fed to the Manticore by Talia Lakshmi Kolluri, The Sleeping Car Porter by Suzette Mayr and Elsewhere by Alexis Schaitkin.
The shortlist for the 2024 prize will be announced on April 9 and the winner will be announced at a live event in Ontario on May 13.
