Here’s the kind of heat and rainfall SC can expect this summer, the Farmers’ Almanac predicts

Prepare to be scorched, South Carolina.

Temperatures across much of South Carolina have been relatively cool lately, but don’t let that fool you. The Palmetto State is on the path toward another blisteringly hot summer, Farmers’ Almanac predicts.

Though many Americans consider Memorial Day weekend (May 27-29 this year) as the start of summer, the official first day of the summer solstice is June 21 for the Northern Hemisphere.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration announced in September that the U.S. suffered through the third-hottest summer on record in 2022. While Farmers’ Almanac isn’t predicting record heat again, it expects more sizzling temperatures this summer, forecasting oppressive heat, showery and thundery weather for South Carolina and the rest of the Southeast.

June, July and August SC weather predictions

The extended forecast from Farmers’ Almanac says to expect plenty of thunderstorms through June in South Carolina, with hot and oppressively humid weather to round out the last week of the month.

South Carolina will kick off July with more oppressive heat and humidity, followed by more rounds of thunderstorms over the following two weeks.

In August, the state will see continued heat and some pop-up showers. Farmers’ Almanac also predicts some intense heat and humidity in the middle of the month, making temperatures feel like they’re over 100 degrees.

How Farmers’ Almanac predicts the weather

Founded in 1818, the Farmers’ Almanac uses a secret formula that includes components such as “sunspot activity, tidal action, the position of the planet,” to predict long-range weather forecasts. The forecasts are typically made two years in advance. Fans of the Farmers’ Almanac have, over the years, calculated that the predictions are accurate 80-85% of the time.

NOAA summer predictions

The NOAA summer outlooks calls for a 40-50% chance of above average temperatures in the Upstate of South Carolina through June and July, along with a 50-60% of above average temperatures for the rest of the state over the same period.

For August, NOAA predicts a 40-50% for above average temperatures for the majority of South Carolina. The coastal region is still expected to see a 50-60% chance of above average temperatures.
