Results are in. Sunset baseball standout voted Dade High School Athlete of the Week

Miami Sunset players surround center fielder Pupi Gonzalez at home plate after his two-run walk-off home run on Friday afternoon to beat St. Brendan 7-5 in a Region 4-4A semifinal at Raul Ibanez Field.

Miami Sunset baseball standout Andres Gonzalez is the Dade High School Athlete of the Week, as voted on by readers in our weekly poll.

Gonzalez went 1 for 2 with a home run in the Knights’ road win at Jensen Beach and then hit a two-run walk-off home run against St. Brendan, completing a comeback from a 5-1 deficit, and leading Sunset to its first regional final since 2013. Sunset then made it to the state semifinal, where it lost in heartbreaking fashion to North Marion to cap a remarkable season with a 17-9 record.

Gonzalez, a senior, finished the season with a .369 batting average (24 for 65) with six home runs, 22 RBI and 20 runs scored.

Doral Academy baseball’s Daniel Restrepo, Westminster Christian softball’s Brooke Rebhan, Edison flag football’s Alexandra Harris and Gulliver Prep baseball’s Brixton Lofgren rounded out this week’s participants.

The Miami Herald Athlete of the Week polls — now one each for Miami-Dade and Broward counties — open Sunday every week and close around 10 p.m. Thursday.
