Richland, Burbank and Grandview boys all play for WA high school basketball titles

The Richland boys basketball team will play for the WIAA 4A state basketball championship today, Saturday, after the Bombers held off a tough Glacier Peak team 70-59 on Friday night in the semifinals in the Tacoma Dome.

The seventh-ranked Bombers will take on top-ranked Mount Si at 3 p.m. today for the title.

Mount Si won the other Friday semifinal, beating Davis of Yakima 57-45.

In Friday’s Richland win, the Bombers and Grizzlies were locked in a tight battle, with 15 lead changes and the contest being tied 12 different times.

Richland led 54-52 going into the fourth quarter, where it outscored Glacier Peak 16-7 down the stretch for the win.

The Bombers had another great shooting night, with 50 percent from the floor and 16 assists.

Richland also outscored Glacier Peak 13-4 on points off of turnovers, as well as 13-4 on second-chance points.

“We talked about it at halftime,” said Richland coach Earl Streufert. “We talked about ball movement and sharing. The ball was definitely moving better in the second half.”

Sophomore Landon Northrop played a key role, finding a mismatch with his opponent and scoring baskets on three consecutive possessions.

“We have a play for that situation based on the matchup,” said Streufert. “It could have been Josh (Woodard), Jack (Forbes) or Lance (Horntvedt). It kind of happened that way tonight with Landon.”

Luke Westerfield had a big game, scoring a team-high 20 points, grabbing 12 rebounds, dishing off 5 assists, and blocking 2 shots.

Josh Woodard added a double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds; while Jack Forbes added 14 points and 2 blocked shots.

Northrop finished with 13 points and a team-high 6 assists.

Josiah Lee led Glacier Peak with 22 points.

“We played defense the whole game tonight,” said Streufert. “What a grinder.”

COLUMBIA-BURBANK BOYS 64, LAKE ROOSEVELT 54: The Coyotes got double-figure scoring from their big three to beat the Raiders for the second time in a month — this time in the 2B state semifinals in Spokane.

With the victory, Todd Schumacher’s team will meet Colfax in the state championship game at 3 p.m. today (Saturday).

Colfax defeated Napavine 78-53 to win the other semifinal on Friday.

“We knew it wasn’t going to be easy against Lake Roosevelt,” said Schumacher, whose team is now 25-0. “We got a good lead, 18 points, in the second half, before they made a run at us.”

Quincy Scott led the way with 17 points, 8 rebounds and 4 steals; while Tristan Frimodt added 16 points, 10 rebounds and 4 steals.

Caden Ross had 17 points too for the Coyotes.

GRANDVIEW BOYS 71, NORTH KITSAP 64: Despite being outrebounded 42-24 by North Kitsap, the hot-shooting Greyhounds rallied past the Vikings for a 2A state semifinal victory in the Yakima Valley SunDome.

Marcelino Armendariz and Cameron Draculan each scored 24 points for the Greyhounds, who outscored North Kitsap 27-14 in the fourth quarter for the victory.

Levi Dorsett added 12 points for Grandview, which shot 68 percent (15 for 22) from the floor in the second half.

Grandview will play Lynden at 3 p.m. Saturday for the state title.

WOODINVILLE GIRLS 62, KAMIAKIN 55: The Braves saw their season end a day earlier than expected in a 4A state tournament loss at the Tacoma Dome.

Jacey Stephens Eggers led the Falcons with 23 points and 17 rebounds to get the victory. Woodinville sank 11 3-point field goals.

Woodinville outscored Kamiakin 18-9 in second-chance points.

The Braves were led by Liv Whitemarsh, who had 16 points and 9 rebounds; Emaunii Smith added 10 points, 9 rebounds and 7 blocked shots. Senior Nicole Wertenberger scored 10 points and had 4 assists in her final game as a Kamiakin player.

Kamiakin finishes with a 24-3 record.

PROSSER BOYS 61, ANACORTES 53: The Mustangs used a 15-7 fourth quarter to pull away for the 2A consolation victory in Yakima.

Prosser senior Kory McClure led all scorers with 19 points, while Koby McClure added 15 points, 9 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 steals.

Jaden Peters and Trent Russell also had 10 points each, with Russell grabbing 6 rebounds.

The Mustangs will take on Renton at 9:30 a.m. Saturday for the fourth-place trophy.

ELLENSBURG GIRLS 44, PROSSER 31: The Mustangs lost to Ellensburg for the fourth time this season, this one coming in the 2A state semifinals in the Yakima Valley SunDome.

The game was close until the final few minutes, when the Bulldogs began to hit a few shots and free throws.

Jamison Philip paced top-ranked Ellensburg with 13 points and 8 rebounds.

Ellensburg has now won 75 consecutive games.

For the second straight year, Prosser will play for the third-place trophy. The Mustangs meet Clarkston at 11:15 a.m. today.

Ellensburg will meet Lynden at 5 p.m. for the title.

In their loss, Deidra Phillips led Prosser with 9 points and 6 rebounds; while Naomi Chavez added 7 points.

OKANOGAN GIRLS 52, WARDEN 45: The Cougars’ bid for the 2B state title ended with a semifinal loss to the Bulldogs in Spokane.

Okanogan used a 20-8 third quarter to pull away for the victory. Jacey Boesel led the Bulldogs with 26 points, 8 rebounds and 7 steals.

Lauryn Madsen led Warden with 18 points and 4 assists, while Makenna Klitzke added 13 points.

Warden will play Adna at 11:15 a.m. today (Saturday) for the third-place trophy.

MABTON GIRLS 62, COLFAX 57: The Vikings were outrebounded 48-30, but their harassing defense forced 31 Colfax turnovers in the 2B consolation game in Spokane.

Mabton outscored Colfax 26-11 in points off of turnovers.

Esmerelda Sanchez led the Vikings with 25 points and 7 steals, while Alana Zavala added 19 points and 5 rebounds.

Mabton will play for a trophy on Saturday, taking on Brewster at 8 a.m. for fourth place.

MOSSYROCK BOYS 58, DESALES 54: The Irish’s big for the 1B state championship was foiled in the Friday semifinals in Spokane, as Tyce Vigre scored 20 points for the Vikings.

Mossyrock led 38-24 at halftime and never looked back.

DeSales was led by Daniel Balof, who had 14 points, 11 rebounds and 3 assists; and Spencer Green, with 14 points and 7 rebounds.

Cale McCollaugh also scored 12 points for DeSales, which takes on Neah Bay at 11:15 a.m. today for third place. The game will be a rematch of a regional play-in game at Kamiakin on Feb. 24, in which the Irish won 65-60.

SUNNYSIDE CHRISTIAN GIRLS 37, GARFIELD-PALOUSE 32: The Knights sank 22 of 31 free throw attempts en route to beating the Vikings in a 1B consolation game.

Taylor Andringa led SSC with 15 points, 9 rebounds and 9 blocked shots; while teammate Hailey Van Wierengen added 10 points and 8 rebounds.

The Knights will play Oakesdale at 9:30 a.m. Saturday for fourth place.
