Get rid of expired drugs for National Prescription Drug Drop Off Day

National Prescription Drug Drop Off Day is slated for Saturday May 9.

A series of organizations want to remind people to check their homes for expired or unwanted medications and to return them to local pharmacies.

Getting rid of expired drugs takes them out of the reach of people who could misuse them, like youth, and it circumvents any environmental hazards that can come from flushing them down the toilet or throwing them in the garbage.

"The misuse of prescription drugs has become a crisis in many communities across the country. National endeavours such as this go a long way in ensuring that those who misuse these medications, often our youth and most vulnerable, are protected from their effects," said Chief Devon Clunis from the WPS in an emailed statement.

This year's event is the third annual Prescription Drug Drop Off Day—it's a joint venture between the Winnipeg Police Service, Pharmacists Manitoba, College of Manitoba of Pharmacists, and is sponsored by the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police, Health Canada, Public Safety Canada, Partnership for a Drug Free Canada, Canadian Pharmacists Association and the Canadian Medical Association

While the event is only on Saturday, medication drop off is available year-round at pharmacies through the Manitoba Medications Return Program.
