Rocky River High School turns to a familiar face to fill head football coach position

Kenneth McClamrock, a head coach for six seasons in Cabarrus and Rowan counties, has been named to take over the football program at Rocky River High School, officials said Wednesday.

McClamrock replaces Tyson Fernandez, who was head coach of the Ravens the past two seasons.

Rocky River’s new head coach has been an assistant at North Mecklenburg and Concord, but he was head coach at East Rowan from 2014-16 and then at Central Cabarrus from 2017-19. The Vikings reached the state playoffs in both 2018 and ‘19.

It has been 10 years since Rocky River last posted a winning record. That came under head coach Jason Fowler, who guided the Ravens to records of 7-5 (2012), 11-3 (2013) and 9-5 (2014). A star player on those teams was Jaire Alexander, now with the NFL’s Green Bay Packers.

Rocky River finished 2-8 and 3-7 the past two seasons. The Ravens are members of the Southwestern 4A Conference, which also includes football powers Butler, Independence, Charlotte Catholic and Providence.

McClamrock enjoyed his greatest success at Central Cabarrus in the 2018 and ‘19 seasons, when the Vikings finished 8-4 and 7-5. They ran a diversified offense, with passing and rushing yardage split about 50-50.

At the end of the 2019 season, McClamrock resigned, saying he wanted to spend more time with his family.
