Saint John teen hospitalized after 2nd shooting in 'ongoing dispute'

Police believe two shootings in east Saint John in the past four days are related.

The latest shooting in what police called an "ongoing dispute" happened Tuesday at about 1:30 a.m., when a 17-year-old was shot several times with a small-calibre gun in the Mystery Lake area off Golden Grove Road, police said.

He was taken to the Saint John Regional Hospital, but officials said his injuries are not life-threatening.

"The 17-year-old victim told investigators that he [was] walking along Mystery Lake when a vehicle drove past him and he was shot," said Staff Sgt. Tony Hayes of the Saint John police.

Hayes said investigators are reviewing evidence to confirm the victim's account.

"The victim refused to provide a further statement to police," Hayes said.

On Friday night, a 22-year-old man was taken to hospital with serious injuries after a shooting near Mountain Road. He is in stable condition.

"The recent shootings are believed to have been conducted by persons known to each other over an ongoing dispute," Hayes said.

"These actions are bringing a large amount of police resources to bear on these individuals and their activities."

No arrests or charges have been laid in either incident, and police said they did not want to provide any other information.
