Judge reserves decision on bail for Saskatoon woman charged with nine counts in child abuse case

A Saskatoon woman facing nine charges in relation to a child abuse investigation is staying behind bars for now.

The 36-year-old accused cannot be named because it could identify the alleged victims. The woman had a bail hearing Tuesday at provincial court and Judge Marilyn Gray reserved her decision to Dec. 30.

The woman's co-accused was released by consent and scheduled to return to court Feb. 16.

It all began on Dec. 7 when a passerby spotted a little boy on the roof of a house on Lenore Drive, said prosecutor Lana Morelli.

"One of the victims was able to leave the residence and caught the attention of a passerby who assisted the victim and called police," she said in an interview.

Morelli opposed releasing the woman because of public safety concerns and because, "the public would be outraged if she was released from custody."

Police arrived at the house that day to find that the boy who had been on roof had been helped down. However, officers found another boy inside of the home who was confined to a bedroom.

The 36-year-old woman and 28-year-old man who live in the home were later arrested after an investigation.

The woman is facing numerous charges, including two counts each of failing to provide necessities of life, criminal negligence causing bodily harm and forcible confinement, and three counts of assault with a weapon.

The man has been charged with assault with a weapon and assault.

Police say the victims were two boys, aged four and seven years old, and a 10-year-old girl.
