School buses in Labrador running again after cold weather

School buses in Western and Central Labrador are up and running again after service was cancelled on Monday when 10 of the buses wouldn't start due to cold weather.

Bus service has resumed in central and western Labrador after being cancelled on Monday when 10 of the buses wouldn't start.

Henry Windeler, education director of the Labrador School Board, says the extreme cold is to blame for the situation.

He said the wind chill hit –53 C on Monday morning in Labrador City.

Windeler said the school board took measures to ensure the buses would be working on Tuesday.

"We brought in a bus mechanic at 11 o'clock to start up all the buses, and then we brought in the bus supervisor at 5 o'clock this morning to restart the buses," he said.

Windeler said the engine block heaters for the buses are always plugged in overnight, but the cold was too much on Monday morning for them to be effective.
