Sea Life needs help to name three new sharks after your favorite Kansas City athletes

Sea Life Kansas City is welcoming some new baby sharks (“doo-doo, doo-doo!”), and it wants your help naming them.

The three Bonnethead sharks will join a family of nearly 5,000 sea creatures at the aquarium in Crown Center. The sharks look similar to Hammerhead sharks with their distinctive shape but are a little smaller, about 2-3 feet.

They came to Kansas City by way of the Wonders of Wildlife Aquarium in Springfield, and all three were born in Missouri. Two of the Bonnethead sharks are juveniles and one is an adult.

Sea Life is asking people to vote on three names inspired by hometown sports teams, like the Chiefs, Sporting KC and the Royals.

Each vote will include one theme and three names, one for each new shark. The choices are:

  • Chiefs: Andy Reid, Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce

  • Sporting KC: Peter Vermes, Dániel Sallói and Johnny Russell

  • Royals: Matt Quatraro, Salvador Perez and Bobby Witt Jr.

The new Bonnetheads come during Sea Life’s “Summer of Sharks.” Throughout this and next month, the aquarium is hosting shark-themed activities and will have multiple species of sharks to see and learn about. The events are included in general admission.
