Serial fraudster gets 40-month prison sentence

A Windsor, N.S., man has been sentenced to 40 months in prison after a five-year crime spree involving more than $100,000 in fraud and theft offences.

Scott Gray, 42, pleaded guilty to 20 charges nearly a year ago in Dartmouth provincial court.

They stemmed from selling cars he didn't own, scamming thousands of dollars from people in his former Bedford neighbourhood and failing to register as a sex offender. The offences occurred between 2011 and 2016.

'He picked the wrong person's car to steal'

Karen Sproule, whose car was taken in 2015 by Gray, said she called police repeatedly about the case and was frustrated by the many adjournments at court.

She said Friday she believes justice was finally served.

"I got my car back, and he went to jail. He picked the wrong person's car to steal. So happy he's going away and can't hurt anyone else."

Gray posed as a former police officer to gain the trust of some of his victims.

Variety of targets

He even admitted to stealing two Great Pyrenees puppies from a breeder in the Annapolis Valley. He paid $1,500 for the dogs with a cheque that bounced and managed to get a $700 cash refund when he returned one dog.

His targets included grocery, car parts, hardware stores and gas stations as well as individuals.

Judge Dan MacRury also ordered Gray to pay tens of thousands of dollars in restitution to various victims — both individuals and businesses — including $14,500 to Kingston Auto and $24,510 to Carquest.
