A motorcyclist suffered serious injuries in a crash that shut a main road through a village.

Emergency services were called at about 08:10 BST on Tuesday morning to the A61 Derby Road in Wingerworth, south of Chesterfield.

The collision involved a black BMW car and a blue BMW motorbike, near the Nottingham Drive junction, and closed the road between Lodge Drive and Longedge Rise.

The motorcyclist was taken to hospital for treatment, where he remains in a serious but stable condition, police said.

In a statement issued on its social media channel at about 09:45, Derbyshire Police said the closure was "likely to remain in place for some time", with the road not reopening until about 13:30.

Derbyshire Fire Service said one casualty was in the care of East Midlands Ambulance Service after crews arrived.

Firefighters made the scene safe before leaving it in the care of police.

Police are calling on anyone with information to make contact.

Derbyshire County Cricket Club advised people travelling to the county championship match with Yorkshire in Chesterfield to plan ahead for the closure.
