Ontario's police watchdog is investigating after a 36-year-old man was left seriously injured following a vehicle collision in Pickering Monday morning.

In a news release Monday afternoon, the province's Special Investigations Unit said a Durham Regional Police officer attempted to stop a Mercedes-Benz on Bayly Street at around 3 a.m.

"The vehicle fled and the officer pursued in his cruiser," the release reads.

"A short distance away, at Bayly Street and Brock Road, the Mercedes-Benz became involved in a collision with another vehicle."

The SIU says the man was taken to hospital for his injuries.

Four investigators and two forensic investigators have been assigned to the case, the SIU says.

Durham Regional Police said on Twitter the collision left one male with serious injuries, while a second male left the scene and is currently outstanding. Brock Road from Bayly Street to Plummer Street will remain closed while the SIU investigates, police add.

The SIU is called to investigate the conduct of officers that may have resulted in serious injury, sexual assault, the discharge of a firearm or civilian death.

Anyone with information on the collision is asked to contact SIU investigators.
