Six-month construction project begins at County Road 22 and Manning Road

Commuters who pass between Lakeshore and Windsor have an extra reason to dread Monday today.

Essex County is embarking on a six-month-long construction project at the corner of County Road 22 and Manning Road.

More than 40,000 vehicles pass through the intersection every day, according to Tom Bateman, who is in charge of transportation for the county.

The work will be completed in six separate phases, so the project will be very complicated, he added.

"There are no closures on County Road 22, so just lane closures, so they have to maintain traffic at all times, which really restricts their ability to undertake large volumes of work at any time, because they have to keep the traffic moving," He explained. "So that ... impedes the productivity and all adds to the complexity of the project."

The county is spending nearly $7 million on the project which will add more left turn lanes to reduce congestion and improve safety.

"We can actually cycle and push a lot more volume of traffic through the intersection on the the signal phasing time," said Bateman. "So instead of having a long lengthy single line queue to make left turns, we'll allow a double left turn on to 19 are off of 22 so that we can process a lot more traffic."

The engineer added the work should be done in late November.
