Update: SLO County grass fire grows to 150 acres, closes Highway 41

Update, 7:20 p.m.:

The fire, now dubbed the Cotton Fire, grew to 150 acres as of 7:20 p.m., according to Cal Fire.

Firefighters continued to “make good progress” on containing the blaze, the agency said on X.

Cal Fire and other emergency crews were battling a large brush fire that broke out near the Cholame Y in northern San Luis Obispo County on Friday evening.

In a post on X, Cal Fire said the blaze began burning in the area of Highway 41 north of the Y around 5:30 p.m.

By 6:20 p.m., it was 50 acres with a moderate rate of spread. No structures were threatened.

Traffic along Highway 41 was at a standstill due to the fire response, according to the Caltrans Quickmap.

According to CHP’s traffic incident report page, Caltrans had closed the southbound side of Highway 41 just north of the Y intersection. Just before 7 p.m. Cal Fire requested a full shut down of Highway 41 between the Y and the Kern County line, according to the CHP page.
