Smiles and choked-up tears: Rosie MacLennan's parents after Rio

Canadians have watched Rosie MacLennan win gold medals on the trampoline in two Olympics now, but her parents have seen much more: not only the triumphs but the hard work that's gone into making those medals a reality.

After stepping off the long flight from Rio at Toronto's Pearson International Airport Tuesday morning, MacLennan's mother and father were emotional as they shared what it's like to support their daughter.

"To see her get the result that she's worked so hard for all those years was wonderful," said Rosie's mom Jane MacLennan, choking up.

"We see the whole journey, people only see the end result," she said, explaining her choked tears. "We see all the ups and downs, no pun intended."

Watching Rosie in Rio

Jane and John MacLennan were with Rosie in Rio for the past two weeks, watching and supporting their daughter through her competitions.

"It's always a bit nerve-racking, my shoulders go up with every jump," said Jane. "But I'm always grateful she lands on the trampoline."

As parents, Jane and John said they encouraged their daughter to continue training despite some bumps along the way. Last summer, Rosie suffered through a concussion but managed to overcome it in time for Rio.

Another obstacle, said Jane, was helping her daughter overcome body image insecurities.

"You need the power in your legs and in your tush in order to reach the heights. Skinny doesn't get you that," said Jane. "We sat down and encouraged her to stick with it."

This coming Sunday is Rosie's birthday and her father said he hopes to celebrate with some barbecue.

"She wants to have a good pizza somewhere and a glass of wine," said John.

"It's crazy to see the reception we got here," said Rosie upon arriving at Toronto Pearson Airport Tuesday.

"The support that we've been getting is incredible."
