Snowstorm warning prompts dozens of schools to close early or altogether

Dozens of schools in Newfoundland — most of them on the Avalon Peninsula — are either closing early Wednesday, or will close for the full day, as the island braces for its first snowstorm of the school year.

More than 90 schools are closing early or altogether, according to the Newfoundland and Labrador English School Board website.

St. John's metro schools are all closing an hour early.

The forecast is calling for morning rain to turn into snow, which will turn into heavy snowfall in the early afternoon.

Snowfall is expected to reach 10 cm to 20 cm in most areas, with as much as 30 cm over higher terrain.

Nine schools in central Newfoundland are also adjusting closure times.

École Rocher-du-Nord in St. John's is closing at 12:30 p.m. St. Bonaventure's College, a private school in St. John's, is closed for the day, and Lakecrest School is closing early.

As of 8 a.m. NT, the Metrobus service in metro St. John's was on normal schedules.
