Southern Regional Stormwater Drainage Committee Master Plan Agreement endorsed by MD of Taber council
During the M.D. of Taber Council meeting that took place on June 25, 2024, Councilor Harris, the co-chair of the Southern Regional Stormwater Drainage Committee, spoke to Council about the importance of the Southern Regional Stormwater Drainage Committee project.
“The Stormwater Drainage Committee has been working since 2014 to find a way to alleviate flooding from major storm events,” said Councillor Harris. “We’ve had some one in 100-year storm events almost back-to-back over a couple of years with major flooding throughout not only in the M.D. of Taber but throughout the region from Lethbridge to Medicine Hat and I think each region has had big storm events. The committee was formed to find ways to solve the drainage issues from major storm events and working with our municipal partners from the region from Lethbridge to Medicine Hat, we’ve been able to work together to find solutions.”
Councillor Harris stated that the Horsefly Emergency Spillway is the first of seven projects that was identified in the Storm Drainage Master Plan.
“I think it’s important for the M.D. of Taber to continue to support the work of the Southern Regional Stormwater Drainage Committee in working together with all of our partners to solve the problems throughout the region and our endorsement of this brings us on as a partner with the other municipalities and towns in the region to solve stormwater drainage issues,” said Councillor Harris. “It’s a win for the region, it’s a win for the municipality, and I think it’s good for the Municipal District of Taber to be one of the partners on this drainage committee.”
Deputy Reeve DeGroot made a motion that the M.D. of Taber endorse the Southern Regional Stormwater Drainage Committee Master Agreement as proposed and the motion was carried.
“I would like to thank co-chairs Councilor Harris and Gary Frace from SMRID as well as Councilor Turcato and Councilor Hildebrand for ensuring that the very important regional project moves forward,” said Reeve Tamara Miyanaga.
