Sprawling ranch — where John Wayne’s ‘presence still lives on’ — lists in California
He was the legendary star of many beloved westerns like “The Cowboys” and “Red River,” and now John Wayne’s former sprawling, 2000-acre ranch has landed on the real estate market in the Golden State.
It can be yours — for $12 million.
“This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to get your hands on the former ranch of the iconic western film star John Wayne,” listing agent Tatiana Novick said in a news release. “As an action hero to many, John Wayne’s presence still lives on in Rancho Pavoreal’s very masculine and western aesthetic.”
The ranch, named Rancho Pavoreal, is nestled in the agricultural community of Sage, the listing on Coldwell Banker Homes describes. It has a plethora of functioning features throughout its large acreage, including:
Primary ranch house
Barn
Three wells
Horse trails
“Upon John Wayne’s passing, this property was transformed into a dude ranch, where visitors saw it as a ‘home away from home’ that rejuvenated their body and nourished their soul,” Novick said. “A perfect multi-purpose ranch, Rancho Pavoreal can be used for camps, hunting, horseback riding, cattle grazing, riflery, archery, hiking, equestrian use, a motorcycle ranch–you name it, it has it.”
Wayne, lovingly known as The Duke, was an iconic actor known for playing “the strong, silent type” of cowboy throughout his long film career. He was catapulted to fame thanks to the 1939 western “Stagecoach.” Though he appeared in several award-worthy roles, he didn’t win an Oscar until his portrayal of Rooster Cogburn, a moody U.S. Marshal who teams up with a young girl to track down her father’s killer in “True Grit.” He died in 1979.
Hemet is about 85 miles southeast of Los Angeles.
