Summerside drummer prepares for World Solo Drumming Championship

A young P.E.I. drummer is heading from Summerside to Scotland for an international competition this fall.

Devin Paynter, 18, practiced up to five hours a day for the past 15 years to build his skills.

"It's tunnel vision. Complete tunnel vision and it's just something that you love. You drown out everything else around; you're completely focusing on that one thing," he said.

He's preparing for the World Solo Drumming Championships. He's the College of Piping's first student to do it.

He's getting plenty of help from the other musicians at the college.

"These are people that you're totally like bound with for like the rest of your life and it's like you have that connection with them that everyone is here for each other. They help each other out."

That help counted even more when his mother, Maxine, was diagnosed with a life-threatening illness a few years ago.

"They were there for him, they talked to him, they just catered to him, they took him in and it was just overwhelming," she said.

Paynter leaves for Scotland in mid-October.
