Suspect Dead, Ranger Injured in Fourth of July Shooting at Yellowstone National Park

The National Park Service said there were no active threats to the public following the incident

A shooting at Yellowstone National Park on the Fourth of July left a suspect dead and a park ranger injured, authorities said.

Rangers responded to Canyon Village, a central area of the park, on a report of a person with a gun who was allegedly making threats, according to a statement from the National Park Service. “When rangers contacted the individual there was an exchange of gunfire between the subject and law enforcement rangers,” the agency said.

As a result, the suspect died, according to the National Park Service, which said it was not immediately releasing the suspect's name. A park ranger was injured in the incident and they are listed in stable condition at a local hospital.

The agency said there were no active threats to the public following the incident.

According to the statement, the FBI is leading the investigation with help from National Park Service special agents. The National Park Service said the area around the Canyon Lodge complex is closed as the investigation continues.

“Details around this incident are under investigation,” the statement said. “No additional information is available at this time.”
