Suspected food tampering continues in Halifax with 2 more cases

Halifax Regional Police are investigating two more cases of metal objects found in food sold in the city, including a razor blade in a carton of eggs.

The carton was bought at the Alderney Landing Farmers' Market in Dartmouth on May 23. A woman called police on Thursday to report she had found a razor blade inside the carton, they said.

It's not yet known how the blade wound up in the carton, though the vendor told police that they typically use cartons that have been returned by their customers.

This was the second case of possible food tampering reported to police on Thursday. Earlier in the day, a woman called police to say she had found a nail inside a potato she had cooked.

She had purchased the potatoes about one month prior from Giant Tiger on Dutch Village Road. The potatoes came in a brown bag carrying the brand River Valley.

These two reports come after several other incidents of potential food tampering in the Maritimes, including a report of a nail found in a potato on Saturday at the Atlantic Superstore on Halifax's Quinpool Road.

Earlier this week, Yarmouth police investigated after a resident found a nail in a bag of potatoes, also purchased from Giant Tiger.

On May 18, P.E.I. RCMP began investigating after a person found a metal object in a potato bought at the Montague Atlantic Superstore.

The following day, a man found a nail in his potato in Antigonish, N.S., and took it to police. Police say the Farmer's Market brand potatoes were sold by the Atlantic Superstore in late April or early May.

An Atlantic Canada recall was issued by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency earlier this month, for some Loblaws and Strang's Produce potatoes, after three people found metal objects in spuds in Nova Scotia, N.B. and P.E.I.

There have been several suspected cases of food tampering reported this month:
