Teen, 15, Charged with Fatal Shooting of Lyft Driver Who Was a U.S. Army Interpreter

A 15-year-old boy has been arrested and charged in Washington, D.C., in connection with the death of a Lyft driver.

Nasrat Ahmad Yar, 31, was shot and killed in the early morning hours of July 3 while working as a Lyft driver, according to Metropolitan Police Department Assistant Chief Leslie Parsons, who offered an update on the investigation during a press conference earlier this week, per WJLA.

“He was working extremely hard to support his family. He dropped off a passenger and was sitting in his vehicle when he was approached by several young suspects. It appears, through our investigation, that these suspects may have been trying to take his vehicle,” Parsons said. “During that interaction, one of the suspects shot Nasrat. They then fled from the scene, running through an alley, where they were captured by surveillance video that was instrumental in solving this case.”

After “eight months of diligence and dedication” by the department’s homicide detectives, a 15-year-old boy was “narrowed in on” as a suspect in the homicide, police said during the press conference. On Friday, the teen — whose identity has not been shared — was arrested and charged with “felony murder while armed,” Parsons said.

Several “outstanding suspects who were involved” in the homicide remain at large, Parsons noted, as he called on the community to “come forward” with any relevant information.

“The reckless actions of these teens cost a man’s life and shattered a family just starting out on their journey in this country. No arrest will be able to make them whole, but today’s arrest sends a message loud and clear: To those looking to introduce guns on our streets, our detectives do not rest until reckless actions like this are met with severe consequences," he added.

According to a GoFundMe set up by loved ones, Ahmad Yar had been the “sole provider” for his wife and four children, who ranged from 15 months to 13 years old. He was working “an extra late shift” at the ride-share company when he was killed.

On Friday, an update was posted on the fundraising page, which has raised over $520,000 for his family, reacting to the news of the arrest.

“Many thanks to the Metropolitan Police Department for the tremendous hard work and meticulousness that has led to this milestone, as well as the empathy and respect for Nasrat’s loved ones,” wrote Jeramie Malone, who organized the fundraiser on Ahmed Yar’s wife’s behalf. “Please continue to hold Nasrat’s family in your hearts. Thank you all so much for your support.”

Malone, who helped Ahmad Yar and his family escape Afghanistan, told Fox 5 in July of the family's brave move, "He was in a lot of danger in Afghanistan, so yeah, for him to come here and in less than two years after arriving in the States —  it’s really devastating.”

"I don’t have words for it. It’s unfathomable how senseless this is for somebody who came here for the express opposite reasons," veteran and friend Matthew Butler told the outlet.

A spokesperson for Lyft also provided a statement to the outlet, expressing the company's sadness about Ahmad Yar's death.

"Our hearts are with Mr. Nasrat's loved ones as they confront this unspeakable tragedy. We have reached out to his family to offer our support and are in contact with law enforcement to assist with their investigation," the company said.
