1 in custody after boy seriously injured in stabbing at Etobicoke high school

One person is in custody after a 17-year-old boy was found with a serious stab wound in an Etobicoke high school cafeteria, Toronto police say.

Police were called to Thistletown Collegiate Institute, in the Islington Avenue and Albion Road area, shortly before 11 a.m. for a report of a stabbing.

A Toronto police resource officer found the student in the cafeteria with a stab wound, police said.

"We're all feeling very thankful she was here," TDSB spokesperson Shari Schwartz-Maltz said.

There are 31 security cameras inside the school as well as two Toronto police resource officers on site, she added.

Schwartz-Maltz could not confirm whether the person in custody is a student.

Police said the victim suffered a stab wound to the chest. However, the TDSB reported the student was stabbed in the back.

Counsellors to be available

Mike Bujold, whose son is a Grade 9 student, said he has never seen anything like this in the two years his family has lived near the high school.

Bujold said his son was in the room next to the cafeteria when the violence broke out.

"It's kind of scary," he said, as he watched police investigators search for evidence.

The TDSB will have counsellors available to students and teachers Tuesday, and Schwartz-Maltz said any parents who have concerns should get in touch with the principal.

"Everyone is working as hard as they can to make this a safe school."

A hold-and-secure at the high school was lifted shortly after 3 p.m., the TDSB confirmed.
