Teen charged in arson that caused $29,000 damage to Airdrie rec centre

Airdrie RCMP have charged a teen with arson for allegedly starting a fire at Genesis Place recreation centre in January.

On Jan. 23, the city's fire department and RCMP responded to a report of a fire in progress at the rec centre on East Lake Boulevard, police said in a release Saturday.

The fire was quickly put out, but the damage was estimated to be approximately $29,000.

Police investigated and found the fire had been started in a garbage bin inside the building's northeast corner.

"Having access to high quality video surveillance was a big help in solving this crime," said Const. Dan Martin in the release.

On Friday, Airdrie RCMP arrested and 14-year-old male and charged him with arson. The teen can't be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
