Teen charged after stabbing at Winnipeg party

A teenager has been arrested after a fight at a party turned violent early Sunday, Winnipeg police say.

Officers were called to a housing complex on the 1300 block of Raleigh Street around 1:20 a.m.

"[The victim and the suspect] were casual acquaintances from the complex that they live in. This party was at a third location in the complex, not the home of either of them," said Const. Jay Murray, with the Winnipeg Police Service.

They got into a verbal dispute and the suspect "pulled out a knife and stabbed the person several times," Murray said.

A 20-year-old man was taken to hospital in critical condition but has since been upgraded to stable.

Around 7:30 a.m., officers found the suspect in a different unit at the housing complex.

A 15-year-old boy was charged with aggravated assault and possession of a weapon.

Murray said parties where people are drinking or doing drugs too often turn violent, and it's worse during the summer.

"I think from the time I started this job, drinking parties have been responsible for a lot of what the police department does," he said.

"It's unfortunate, it happens all over the city."
