Teen dies after falling from cliff while egg harvesting near Igloolik

A 17-year-old girl died over the weekend after she fell off a cliff while harvesting eggs near Igloolik, Nunavut.

RCMP received a report at around 2 p.m. on Sunday that the girl had died while camping, according to a news release.

A search and rescue team along with the Igloolik RCMP went to the scene of the incident, about 25 kilometres north of Igloolik.

"Preliminary investigation revealed the youth was harvesting eggs when she fell off a cliff," the news release says.

The incident is still under investigation but RCMP say no foul play is suspected.

The girl's body has been brought back to Igloolik.

Igloolik mayor Joanna Quassa says the girls' friends are taking the news quite hard.

"It is a really sad thing that happened," she said.

The site where the girl died was not known for egg harvesting but Quassa says it is common to camp up there.

RCMP confirmed that the office of the chief coroner is taking over the case.
