16-year-old boy wounded in North Texas road rage shooting feels ‘lucky to be alive’
A 16-year-old boy was shot Saturday in a North Richland Hills road rage incident, and police are asking for the public’s help in finding the shooter.
The teen was on Loop 820 near Iron Horse Boulevard around 10:45 a.m. Saturday when someone in an SUV tailgating him fired off several shots into his car, according to a news release from North Richland Hills police. Investigators believe the incident may have started farther west when the teen, driving a purple car, may have accidentally cut off the driver of the dark-colored SUV.
Police said the teen was shot once but is expected to be OK, having already been treated by and released from a hospital.
At a police news conference Thursday evening, the 16-year-old said he heard several shots but didn’t realize that he had been hit by the gunfire until he noticed blood on his shirt.
“When the doctors told me I was lucky to be alive, it just made me rethink life a little bit more,” said the teen, who asked to remain anonymous, according to KXAS-TV. “... God gave me a chance again and I feel like I should appreciate it.”
Police released photos showing bullet holes and a broken window in the victim’s car.
