Threat disrupts several St. John's schools; man, 19, arrested

Police arrested a 19-year-old man Thursday after threats were reported by a St. John's high school, and security measures were quickly triggered at other schools.

According to the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary, the threat was reported by Holy Heart High School on Bonaventure Avenue, while the arrest was made — with the help of police dogs — in a neighbourhood in the east end.

"The individual fled their residence and were then located in the area of Logy Bay Road by patrol officers," Const. James Cadigan told reporters Thursday afternoon.

"There was information passed along to the [Newfoundland and Labrador English School District] to ensure public safety and they took measures to ensure the safety of the students," he said.

Notes sent to parents and guardians from several schools said the officials had implemented a "safe schools" protocol.

The principal of Holy Heart advised that school was secured for about an hour and 45 minutes.

"We have been advised by the police that they were in pursuit of an individual who had made a threat towards the school on social media," wrote Sheldon Barry.

Police would not comment on the nature of the threat.

The 19-year-old suspect had been scheduled to appear in court Thursday afternoon to be charged with uttering threats but the matter was delayed until Friday morning.

He is also being charged with breach of a court order.
