A toddler has died after being struck by the driver of a recycling truck in Barrie, Ont., police say.

In a news release issued Friday, the Barrie Police Service said officers responded to a collision call around 12:45 p.m. Thursday on Red Maple Lane.

Investigators say a 23-month-old boy was taken to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries, and was later airlifted to a Toronto-area hospital.

The boy died in hospital overnight, police said.

The investigation into the crash is still underway.
