What are the top high school basketball teams in North Carolina? Check our poll

Eight new teams join the statewide high school basketball rankings from The Charlotte Observer and News & Observer of Raleigh this week, and there is one new No. 1 team.

Some highlights:

In 4A girls’ basketball, Independence (7-0) took over the top spot. The Patriots were scheduled to play No. 2 Charlotte Catholic at home Tuesday. Independence is also ranked atop The Charlotte Observer’s regional Sweet 16 poll, which turns 40 next year.

Cary’s Panther Creek High School, which was previously in the top spot, dropped to No. 4 after losing its first game.

In the 2A poll, there are two new girls’ teams: unbeaten North Stanly (9-0) is No. 5 and unbeaten Community School of Davidson (4-0) is No. 10. There’s one new team in the 1A poll. Unbeaten East Columbus joins at No. 8.

In the boys’ rankings, there are five new schools, and all five No. 1 teams stayed in place.

In the NCISAA poll, Forsyth Country Day, which has won eight of its first 10 games joins the rankings. In 3A, unbeaten Gastonia Ashbrook (5-0) is in at No. 10. In 2A, Salisbury (5-2) joins at No. 6 and unbeaten Lincolnton (5-0) at No. 8.

In the 1A poll, 7-0 Northside is new at No. 10.
