Toronto woman in coma returns home from Croatia

A Toronto woman who has been in a coma since suffering serious head injuries while on vacation in Croatia is now back on Canadian soil.

A plane carrying Anna Leibenko landed at Pearson International Airport early Saturday and she was immediately transferred to Sunnybrook hospital for treatment.

The 24-year-old former Argos cheerleader sustained serious head injuries after falling off a catamaran and striking her head on Aug. 17. She reportedly fell three metres before striking her head and falling into the ocean. She did not have travel insurance.

CBC's Steven D'Souza interviewed friends and family members who were at the hospital on Saturday.

“I spoke with two of Anna’s close friends who are here at her side at Sunnybrook," D'Souza reported. "They were also with her in Croatia and describe the experience as a nightmare. Her brother said her situation hasn’t improved and she remains in a coma.”

Donations from friends, family and strangers have helped the family raise $140,000, money needed to pay the cost of bringing her home, plus other medical bills.

“Her family says while they’ve overcome one major hurdle, Anna still has a long way to go in her recovery," reported D'Souza.
