Miami-Dade cop out of hospital with fractures after driver runs red light: reports

A crash involving a police car shut off a major intersection leading to the Palmetto Expressway in Miami Lakes on Monday, according to reports.

What to know about the crash and detour

What happened: Police on Monday morning shut down Northwest 167th Street at 67th Avenue. Miami Herald news partner CBS News Miami reports that a Miami-Dade police car was badly damaged when a driver in a pickup truck ran a red light. The officer was airlifted to the hospital in critical condition, and a pickup truck also was damaged and its driver hospitalized.

Injuries: Miami-Dade police spokesman Detective Alvaro Zabaleta said the officer’s condition improved to stable later in the morning, and CBS News Miami reported that he was released from the hospital around noon. The driver of the truck was treated for minor injuries and released, the TV station reported.

Officer: Miami-Dade Police Director Alfredo “Freddy” Ramirez told CBS News Miami that the officer’s name is Carson Skelton and said he’s been on the force for about 11 months. Ramirez said the officer suffered a “few fractures.”
