Traffic alert: one person dead, one major North Miami-Dade street closed at rush hour

Tuesday morning rush hour began with parts of a major street and avenue closed in Miami Gardens by a two-car crash that left one person dead.

Miami Gardens police said around 4:09 a.m., the driver of an Infiniti heading west on Northwest 183rd Street ran the light at Northwest 22nd Avenue and smashed into a southbound Ford Taurus, killing the driver of the Ford on the scene.

Northwest 183rd Street, Miami Gardens Drive, was closed from 20th to 22nd avenues and Northwest 22nd Avenue is closed from 181st Street to 184th Street.

WSVN-Channel 7’s traffic helicopter showed the crumpled Ford Taurus near the intersection and the Infiniti stopped over a block away, on the other side of the street and sitting against a fence in a parking lot. Pieces of the cars’ bodies and windshields strewn on the street connected the cars.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue said the crash happened after 4 a.m. and one person was taken to a hospital as a trauma alert patient.

This is a developing story and will be updated as more is learned.
