Have a traffic or parking fine in Olathe? Donate school supplies to pay it off this month

If you have time to go pick up some school supplies, you may be able to save some money paying back fines in Olathe. Drivers with traffic infractions or parking tickets in the city can donate school supplies to pay off their fines later this month.

From July 15 through 26, the City of Olathe Municipal Court is accepting school supply donations for credit toward traffic or parking fines. A purchase of $15 worth of new school supplies can be used for a $50 credit toward fines, according to a city press release.

The initiative stems from a partnership with the Olathe Public Schools Foundation, which aims to provide more than 2,200 backpacks for the city’s most vulnerable students for the start of classes this fall. The foundation is asking for donations of 17 to 18 inch backpacks, sticky notes, markers, No. 2 pencils, three-ring binders, scissors, spiral notebooks, colored pencils, dry erase markers, glue sticks and glue bottles.

A receipt is required along with the donation in order to receive the credit toward traffic fines.

“We’re proud to partner with the Olathe Public Schools Foundation and provide an additional resource for students,” Olathe Municipal Court Judge Katie McElhinney said in the release. “Students should feel excited to return to school in the fall.”
