Trespasser struck, killed by Via train east of Ottawa

Via rail is resuming its service to Churchill after a delay of nearly seven weeks.

A trespasser was struck and killed by a Via train east of Ottawa on Sunday night.

The collision occurred on a stretch of tracks in the Carlsbad Springs area, about 30 kilometres east of Ottawa, at 6 p.m, Via Rail spokesman Malcolm Andrews told CBC News.

Initial reports from Via suggested that the train had 119 passengers on board at the time of the collision. None of them were hurt.

Two buses were used to take the passengers on to their destinations — one went to Ottawa, the other took the passengers going further than that.

Via expects that operations should be back to normal for Monday morning.
