True Detective has been renewed for a fifth season with Night Country creator Issa López once again at the helm.

López, who took over the franchise from True Detective creator Nic Pizzolatto, has inked a deal with HBO and will also develop new projects for the network.

Ending last week on an ambiguous note for one of its protagonists, Night Country stars Jodie Foster and Kali Reis as two detectives investigating the disappearance of eight men from a research station in the fictional town of Ennis, Alaska.

"Issa López is that one-of-a-kind, rare talent that speaks directly to HBO's creative spirit. She helmed True Detective: Night Country from start to finish, never once faltering from her own commendable vision, and inspiring us with her resilience both on the page and behind the camera," HBO's head of drama Francesca Orsi said in a statement announcing the deal (via The Hollywood Reporter).

"Alongside Jodie [Foster] and Kali [Reis]'s impeccable performances, she's made this installation of the franchise a massive success, we are so lucky to have her as part of our family."

Despite the season's success — it ranks as the most watched chapter of True Detective ever — Pizzolatto has been very vocal in his criticism of Night Country, sharing fans' negative reviews of López's story on his social media.

Pizzolatto, who isn't directly involved in the new season but has maintained an executive producer credit, has been criticised by viewers and critics alike for his dismissive attitude, with Night Country star Reis responding to criticism on Twitter/X.

After being made aware of Pizzolatto's views, the star wrote: "That's a damn shame…but hey I guess 'if you don't have anything good to share, shit on others' is the new wave."

Meanwhile, López has reiterated her admiration for Pizzolatto's writing in an interview with Vulture.

"I believe that every storyteller has a very specific, peculiar and unique relation to the stories they create, and whatever his reactions are, he's entitled to them," the showrunner said of her predecessor's comments.

"That's his prerogative. I wrote [Night Country] with profound love for the work he made and love for the people that loved it."

True Detective: Night Country airs on Sky Atlantic and streaming service NOW in the UK. In the US, it airs on HBO.
