Tuesday’s boys’ basketball rewind: Providence stops Garinger, sets up East Meck showdown

Providence High School’s boys basketball team dominated Garinger Tuesday night, 66-27, setting up the Panthers for a big game on Friday.

Providence finishes the season on the road with a chance to improve their conference tournament seeding. The Southwestern 4A league tournament tips off next week.

“We play East (Meck) on Friday,” Panthers’ coach Nick Boney said. “That game should be to determine who gets the fourth seed in our conference tournament.”

Boney is in just his second season with the Panthers, and he felt they had a bit of a rocky season due to a variety of reasons, but mainly because of a rash of injuries.

A win Friday would finish off a nice bounce-back for his team. After a 1-9 start to the season, Providence is 8-5 since and currently has a two-game win streak.

“(Finishing fourth) would be good for us,” Boney said. “That is where we finished last year so I wanted them to finish fourth or higher.”

On Tuesday, sophomore Jack Siegel finished the game with 14 points to lead the Panthers. He scored all of his points in the first half and sat most of the fourth quarter once the Panthers secured a large enough lead.

Even in a lopsided victory, Siegel feels there is plenty to learn from the win — and to get ready for Friday night.

“We really just have to come out with energy,” Siegel said. “We have to stay connected and stay disciplined. Really just making sure we are giving 100 percent effort.”

THREE WHO MADE A DIFFERENCE

Jack Siegel, Providence: Siegel led all scorers and also found a few teammates for assists.

Caleb Gaither, Providence: The sophomore point guard finished with 11 points. He was very efficient from the floor and also contributed on defense helping force a few turnovers.

Liam Drayton, Providence: Drayton scored all 12 of his points in the second half. He was able to create space in the paint and finish over top of the Wildcat defenders.

WHAT’S NEXT?

Providence will finish the season on the road at East Meck, 7:30 p.m. Friday. Garinger ends its regular season on the road at Rocky River, 7:30 p.m. Friday.

Tuesday’s #BIG5 top performers

Chris Eagan, Charlotte Catholic: Eagan had a game-high 26 points in a 58-51 win over East Mecklenburg.

Houston Hartsell, East Lincoln: Hartsell made a driving layup with two seconds left to give his team a 59-58 win over North Iredell. East Lincoln won its fourth straight.

Chadlyn Traylor, North Meckenburg: In an 80-71 come-from-behind win over Hopewell, Traylor had a game-high 19 points, eight assists and four rebounds.
