TVLine Items: My Next Guest Renewed, Munsters Reboot and More

Charles Barkley and Miley Cyrus are among the celebs set for upcoming installments of My Next Guest Needs No Introduction with David Letterman, which has been renewed for Season 5.

The series, which combines “humor, curiosity and in-depth conversations with extraordinary people,” finds the former Late Night host back in the interview chair following a 33-year reign in late night. Previous guests include Barack Obama, Robert Downey Jr., Will Smith, Cardi B and John Mulaney.

Ready for some more recent newsy nuggets? Well…

* A reboot of The Munsters from James Wan, Ingrid Bisu and Lindsey Anderson Beer (who will serve as showrunner) that “lives and breathes within the Universal Monsterverse” is in the works at Universal, Variety reports.

Additionally, NBC is developing a series adaption the 1976 Richard Pryor-led film Car Wash, which moves the location from Los Angeles, Calif. to Washington, D.C. and centers on “an immigrant family’s generational and cultural clashes between father and son and their eclectic group of employees.”

* MGM+ has released a trailer for Emperor of Ocean Park, which stars Forest Whitaker, Grantham Coleman and others and is set in the worlds of politics, elite academia, and the beaches of Martha’s Vineyard. The series will premiere with its first episode on Sunday, July 14:

* Brandee Evans (P-Valley) will recur in Season 2 of the Hulu comedy UnPrisoned, while Oliver Hudson (The Cleaning Lady) and Jamie Chung (Big Hero 6: The Series, Lovecraft Country) are set to guest-star, according to our sister site Deadline. All eight episodes drop Wednesday, July 17.

* Naturi Naughton will star opposite Tanyell Quian (Queen Sugar) in Lifetime’s Abducted at an HBCU: A Black Girl Missing Movie, premiering Saturday, July 20.

The story follows Shannon (Quian), a college student struggling to pay her tuition who eventually stops attending classes. The only person who notices is her counselor Ellen (Naughton), whose concerns are dismissed by Shannon’s professors, campus administration, students and even her own boyfriend. A determined Ellen inadvertently uncovers a trafficking ring targeting students in need like Shannon and she must fight tirelessly to gain the support she needs to rescue the missing student and bring it all down.

* Marvel Studios and ILM Immersive today revealed that “What If…? – An Immersive Story,” the first-ever interactive Disney+ Original story, will be released on Thursday, May 30, exclusively on Apple Vision Pro as a free app for a limited time.
