Tyreek Hill jokes he’ll be Chiefs’ ‘worst enemy’ when Dolphins come to Arrowhead

Former Chiefs wide receiver Tyreek Hill was in Tokyo when Super Bowl LVII was played, so unlike fans in the United States, he got up early to watch the game.

Hill said on the WHB (810 AM) “Totally Offensive with Dieter and Sherm” podcast that he tuned in at 6 a.m. and was thrilled to see the Chiefs win. Hill specifically mentioned his joy in seeing quarterback Patrick Mahomes, tight end Travis Kelce and coach Andy Reid be crowned champions.

“I was just real happy for my guys,” said Hill, who was traded to the Dolphins last year. “Even though I’m not a part of it, I still feel like I’m a part of it. Watching Pat and Kelce win. Watching coach Reid get another Super Bowl ring to add to his amazing head coaching career. So it felt good, man, to watch the boys win

“It takes it back to what you said earlier though, guys, we’ve got to see the business side of it. No hard feelings towards what’s going on over here. I still love you. I still got major love, baby.”

Hill talked to hosts Dieter Gehrig and Anthony Sherman about the impact Kelce and Mahomes have had on his career. When Hill joined the Chiefs in 2016, he was utilized more as a returner than a receiver that first season.

Initially, Hill learned what he could about playing receiver from Jeremy Maclin, who left the Chiefs after Hill’s rookie season. Kelce proved to be very helpful for Hill.

“I give a lot of credit to those guys. Those guys are All-Pro guys, Hall of Fame guys themselves,” Hill said of Mahomes and Kelce. “I feel like having Kelce on the field at all times definitely helps because he gets doubled, he gets tripled. He’s a defensive coordinator’s worst nightmare. Just having Pat, he’s a guy who can make every throw on the field at every angle at any given situation.

“I’m definitely grateful to have those guys and definitely grateful to have played with those guys because I feel like when I came into the league I had JMac for a very short time and I really didn’t get a chance to learn how to play receiver. But having Kelce around, he really helped me out, taught me a lot of things, so I’m very grateful for both of those guys.”

Returning to Arrowhead

Despite his gratitude for his former teammates, Hill joked that he intends to make life difficult for the Chiefs when the Dolphins visit GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium in the 2023 season.

“Kingdom, when the Dolphins come to Arrowhead Stadium this year guess what we’re going to do? Guess what we’re going to do?” Hill said with a laugh. “I hate to say it, man. I hate to throw up the peace sign against y’all. I hate to do it. Guess what? I’m gonna be your worst enemy that day. I’m gonna be your worst enemy that day.

“You better change the signals. I know every signal y’all got. ... I’m playing bro, I’m playing.”

Dieter later shared this on Twitter and Hill was amused.

On his departure from KC

Hill opened up about not being able to reach a contract extension with the Chiefs, which led to the trade with Miami. Hill got a four-year, $120 million contract extension with the Dolphins.

“The whole idea came about towards the end of the season, right after the Bengals game (in the AFC Championship Game in 2022),” Hill said. “My agent reached out to me and he was like, ‘Tyreek are you ready for a new contract?’ And I was like, ‘Man, you know what? Let’s see what happens during the offseason and we’ll take it from there.’ So a few guys signed. Christian Kirk got his deal. I forgot what his deal was. Christian Kirk had a crazy deal. So I hit up my agent. I’m like, ‘OK, we’ve done seen what’s going on.’ “

Kirk received a four-year, $72 million deal from the Jacksonville Jaguars and Hill knew he had to be paid more.

“He signed the deal,” Hill said, “and like he surpassed me and I’m like, ‘Bro, I love to compete. Like I compete off the field and I’m also going to also compete on the business side of this, too. So I’m not going to let Christian Kirk have a higher contract than me, bro. I’m not. I’m just not.’

“NFL is ‘Not For Long.’ That’s what we need to put in our heads sometimes because like I get it as a player like we get caught up in just living our dream everyday, like man, I’m in the NFL! And we don’t think about the business side of it. I just now started thinking about the business side of it when I got (traded) to the Dolphins. Now I’m looking at the other side of it.”

Hill said he intends to retire after his contract expires following the 2026 season and pursue business interests.

Chiefs are a ‘special team’

Hill was asked about what the Chiefs should do at wide receiver now that JuJu Smith-Schuster and Mecole Hardman have left as free agents.

Some fans are worried about the position, but Hill said the Chiefs will be fine.

“Shoot, I feel like the Chiefs can win with just anything, man, for real, though,” Hill said. “You’ve got the best quarterback in the NFL. You’ve got the best tight end in the NFL. And then you’ve got one of the best offensive play callers in the league, man. ... They can do whatever they want to. That’s a very special team.”

Hill also said the Chiefs need to pay defensive tackle Chris Jones although he added with a smile, that he’d happily recruit Jones to Miami.
