UBC to train students for active shooter situations
Run. Hide. Fight.
Those are the three progressive options that UBC wants students and staff to remember should an active shooter ever appear on campus.
Those steps are part of a new emergency preparedness campaign for students, which will launch in October.
The university's chief risk officer, Ron Holton, says training will involve workshops and online training, including a short educational video that includes an active shooter scenario.
"The intention is to make sure that every student is aware of it," Holton said.

The campaign was prompted by the state of the world, he says, with mass shootings becoming more commonplace.
"We hope of course, as everyone else, as any other post-secondary institution would, that we never experience that kind of situation, but we have to do what we can to be prepared for it," Holton said.
UBC says materials from this campaign have been adapted from a 2014 initiative of a group of Alberta post-secondary institutions.
Simon Fraser University partnered with the Burnaby RCMP to launch their active shooter awareness campaign earlier this year.
