UM women remain unranked in AP poll despite 7-0 record, men slip seven spots to No. 15
Despite being undefeated at 7-0, including a road win last week over a Top 25 opponent, the University of Miami women’s basketball team remained unranked in the latest AP poll, which was released Monday. The Hurricanes finished 26th in the voting, in the “other receiving votes” list with 40 votes, four votes behind No. 25 Penn State.
The UM men’s team dropped seven spots from No. 8 to No. 15 after a lopsided road loss to Kentucky and a home win over Notre Dame.
Coach Katie Meier and her team are coming off an Elite Eight appearance last spring and have carried that momentum over to this season. The Canes upset then-No. 21 Mississippi State on the road last week in the ACC-SEC Challenge and on Sunday beat NJIT 87-43. Miami and No. 3 North Carolina State (9-0) are the only defeated teams remaining in the ACC.
Despite the unblemished record, the UM women failed to break into the Top 25 while five other ACC teams with losses were ranked. Notre Dame (6-1) is ranked No. 14, Virginia Tech (5-2) is No. 15, Louisville (8-1) is No. 18, FSU (6-2) is No. 20, and UNC (5-3) is No. 24.
The UM women were ranked No. 24 in The Athletic Power Rankings this week.
Miami’s men’s team (6-1) bounced back from the 95-73 Kentucky loss with a 62-49 win over Notre Dame. After routing UM, Kentucky lost 80-73 to UNC-Wilmington. The Wildcasts dropped to No. 16 in this week’s poll.
The Hurricanes men are home again Wednesday night against Long Island University. The women are home against Depaul on Friday night.
